Our Weekend at Connooga 2010

Ahhhh, I’m still having some “Post Con” sadness from it being over.  I think a big part of the reason I enjoy it so much, is the camaraderie of geeky friends!  Sometimes we only get to see each other at the Cons because we live far away from each other.  I’m lucky in the fact that some people do live within an hour from me so we can plan other get-togethers.  This was my second Connooga and it was not as crowded as last year, but we still had a blast!  Some of the fun you want on film and some you might not 😉

This was the first time I was able to cosplay with a group and it was so much fun!  We were a GI Joe group and I played the part of Staff Sergeant Alison R. Hart-Burnett, AKA, Lady Jaye.  I personally didn’t watch this series very much as a child, but I completely understand its appeal, since I was watching Saturday morning cartoons in the 80’s.  A friend asked my boyfriend and I if we wanted to join the group.  We were all for it.

For this costume I didn’t really have to sew a whole lot, but just put pieces together.  I was excited to discover I can alter clothes and not destroy them!!  Whoo!!  I did alter my tank top because it was too long and my boyfriend’s shirt he ordered was way too baggy (he was Shipwreck).  I never actually thought about altering clothes that I buy.  Next thing you know I’ll be altering everything in sight!  Tee-hee.  Anyway, I received some great compliments on my Lady Jaye costume and I’m so happy it turned out well.  I wanted my costume to look very accurate and a bit sexy.  I was concerned because flight suits are not meant to be tight fitting.  After I tried it on, seeing it with the gear and my tank top, I felt good about the costume 🙂  It actually fit me very well.

As for the Con we didn’t make it to many panels unfortunately, but ended up socializing a lot.  We hit up the rave, dealer’s room and yes….  The room parties!  Unlike some conventions, Connooga is known for its room parties.  At least there wasn’t destruction of hotel property this year (last year, chair in ceiling of elevator)!!  EEk.  Some of the ladies and I did change over to our rave clothes for Saturday night fun.  I have to say, I’ve always secretly wanted to “dress up” goth.  I wouldn’t want to wear it all the time, just once in a while.  I really like the lolita gothic look.  Cons are a perfect opportunity to dress differently than you normally would and you have more fun that way.  🙂  I usually break out geeky accessories and some baby doll shirts that have anime/sci-fi themes.

<—Ahhh!!  I look like I’m huddling for warmth!

On my second visit to the dealer’s room, I had to check out an item I saw the day before that I was still thinking about purchasing.  A lady had a stand where she made and sold little cosplay accessories, jewelry and rubber duckies dressed as different sci-fi/anime characters.  I loved the duckies!  Since I’m a Narutard and I have a friend who is as well, I had to get the Sasuke and Kakashi duckies.  They were so cute!!  I appreciate that she took a simple concept and made it into a clever item and then applied anime and sci-fi to it.  Very cool.  I did get her business card so if you wanna check out her items, here is a link to her Etsy page: OnlyDucks.etsy.com .  She has links to her other sites on her shop page.

I did see some videos posted from Connooga’s Facebook page and they had a group fire dancing and belly dancing.  I would have loved to see that so I hope they come next year.  Well, I’m almost out of here.  One last tid bit.  If you have not been to Connooga, I recommend checking out the following: Star Trek vs Star Wars debate, Drum Circle, Pole Dancing panel.  Check out the whole hotel property(the Choo Choo hotel used to be a train station), get a fun picture taken on one of the trains and visit the room parties of course(In Building 3).    Please check out my Con and Cosplay Pages!!  I will have more photos up there of the Connooga Convention and of Lady Jaye.  Or just click the links(shrugs).  Sayonara!
