The K-ON Cosplay Madness Begins!
—If you’re an anime fan and you’re into school girl anime or moe type anime then I’m sure you’ve seen K-ON! It’s the hottest thing in Japan right now. Well, I’m jumping on board with the other fans(not that I haven’t been watching it since the beginning). I’ve read some reviews from other sites and hearing a lot of negative reviews. I understand some of their criticism because it’s a pretty calm anime and it’s gotten away from focusing on the girls music, but i can’t help but like it. I have a feeling it will bounce back. The characters are very likeable and I absolutely love the soundtrack for both seasons. I won’t give you all of the crazy details, but a lot of the show’s songs ended up high in the charts in Japan which is a great feat. There really are some impressive stats about the songs. If you go on Wikipedia and type in K-ON, scroll down to “Reception”. It’s all right there!
So the reason I say I’m jumping on board is because I’m going to cosplay as Mio Akiyama for the next convention (Dragon Con). It will be the “Don’t Say Lazy” version. Yeah, yeah!! I know I’m a little behind, because that was last season! This is actually on time for me since K-ON! is still releasing new episodes. All my other cosplays have been from characters whose shows or games have been out of the loop for a while. I couldn’t pass up this particular outfit of Mio’s since it’s has that elegant rock girl look and she plays the character so well in the video! Very kawaii. I do have the long dark hair for the part, but I still thing wigs make the cosplay so much better. So I have a wig all ready to go. My real hair is naturally thin so it doesn’t have the full, thick look of a female anime character. We all wish our hair looked like that!!
I’ve checked out others cosplaying this exact outfit online and there seems to be a general consensus. Lots of girls did it last minute and threw it together. I’m sure for an experienced seamstress this would be cake. I’m still impressed when people can sew something in a few days and it looks amazing (some not so much). lol. Yeah, there were Mio cosplayers online who definitely had that last minute throw together look. It does frazzle me a bit when I see a cosplayer, who you can tell, just pulled their costume out of a bag or suitcase and the costume has never seen an iron. I see this a lot and in most cases a little bit of ironing would make it look 80% better!! It’s one thing if you completely don’t give a crap and I am someone who hates ironing, but COME ON! Pick up the iron for 3 minutes!! heh, heh, heh… Okay, rant over.
I plan to give this one my all like I do with all my costumes. It appears to be a simple dress and if I have the pattern ready and fabric, I think I could finish it in a week. Maybe that should be my goal!! I went to the store the other day to get the fabric and it was not on sale and pretty expensive. Waiting for the price to go down. I’m particular about my fabric.
I don’t plan on being in any contests with this one, so I am ordering the arm warmer. I will make her little top hat and the dress. Now I just need to learn how to make ruffles. RUFFLES….HAVE RIDGES!!! No, not that kind! I really want the ruffles at the top of the dress to stand out since all of the characters had the same big black ruffle somewhere on their dress. Too bad I can’t find myself a band (Yui, Mugi, Ritsu and Azusa)! I might have an Azusa.
Still need to find the turquoise tights & shoes. Whoo! I also want to make her maid outfit at some point. It will depend what else I want to do for Dragon Con. That’s it for now!!
Ja mata!
